I miss my gunsmith

My gunsmith is no longer with us. He did great work at a reasonable price. He would charge me 75 to thread a barrel. muzzle. I've been calling around and the two cheapest I've found in the Houston area is 160.00 and 225.00.

I’m thankful I have an excellent one.
I just paid $120 to have the barrel on my Tikka T3X cut, threaded and recrowned.
The best gunsmiths are a machinist 1st and gunsmith 2nd.

My smith/friend will remove old barrel, thread/chamber blank and headspace install new barrel for 250 cash from me. BUT only in the winter, that's when he does machining. Gun shop part of the business to busy rest of the year.

I will add my scope/rings were removed/reinstalled and boresighted with my cut & thread…I paid $300 for a barrel swap with him doing a blank I supplied when I did my 280AI build.

We had a smith that passed a few years ago. He was a great guy and a pretty good gunsmith and seemed to always have time for a cup of coffee and a bit of conversation. Being retired he seemed to enjoy the company. He made his own breaks that resembled a Vias and he would furnish the break and thread your barrel for $100 and did it while you waited.

Most smiths around here will do thread a barrel off the action for 75.00 and if it is on the action and stocked on along with the scope they charge another 50-75 more. But I checked into this a few years ago. So those prices are not completely out of line. Not many people are able to go out and buy the equipment to do this. Plus they need to make some money for their time.

Both barrels are off the action, one of the gun club members gave me a Smiths number in Old Town Spring. I called him and he's going to thread both for 160 (80 each).

PS: Forgot to mention that he also wants me to bring my suppressor so he can check alignment.

Yeah there was a local here that was a railroad machinist as well as having a long family background in gunsmithing that threaded a lot of AR and other barrels for me for $40 or so. He chambered a pile of barrels for me also. The bad thing was he was a chain smoker pretty much and it finally got him about a year ago. Good guy and lot's of knowledge.

One of my friends is also a gunsmith. He's 82 but still very active. But he's also diabetic and over weight and its taking a toll on him. If he dies he will die happy cause he loves his groceries and he loves hunting and fishing.
