Hats off…

We went last night before the fog rolled in and blanked on a couple of stands. Afterwards were discussing our blank stands and this is what we came up with...
We thermal hunt on places that are religiously trapped for critters. We are also at the time of year where I believe we have the lowest number of coyotes.
They’ll have their litters in May or so and the population is replenished. We’ll have the most coyotes on the properties in July. From then until now we’ve trapped/shot all the “dumb” ones as I like to say, so now we’re dealing with the smart ones that are left. They’d had 9 months to see their buddies caught or shot and are pretty smart by this time of year.
That may sound like an excuse and technically I guess it is, got to have something to try and explain why we aren’t hearing anything and so many blank stands, lol.
So, my hats off to all those still knocking down coyotes on a regular basis. Y’all are killing the cream of the crop so to speak! One day, we hope to be as successful.
It’s like we can go once and think there’s nothing to this calling game. Then you go 10 more times and start doubting everything you’re doing and what’s changed since the last successful outing??? I guess it’s those successful stands that fuel us to keep going despite getting our butts kicked!!

I wish I could get to half of my spots to try! Lol… can’t get off the road up here to park in most places. I tried one set last night out of pure frustration. Trudged a couple hundred yards in 12-14 inches of snow just because it warmed up a bit and got cold again. Tough walking, but I figured the coyotes could stay on top at least, and might actually move around. No sooner got setup to call and white out snow squall came through. Probably couldn’t see 150 feet with scanner so waited that out for about 10 minutes. Spent close to an hour throwing out vocals and a bit of distress with no replies from coyotes. I did call in a pair of greys to guinea pig distress. I’m starting to think the “cream of the crop” coyotes are smarter than me, and have left the area for more humane living conditions! Lol… Really starting to dislike snow!

We had 7.5” a couple weeks ago. Everyone loved it that day (Wednesday) but by the next day everyone hated it, except the kids and that’s only because they were out of school. Thankfully that snowstorm was like a once every hundred years or so storm. Hoping that was it for my lifetime, lol!!!
