ok, last weekend i caught a grey fox in my barn..@8 oclock.. he darted out the back and then just started hunting again in the brush.(i have a ton of rabbits in my pasture and on the banks, i rabbit hunt too..) anyway, i jumped out of the truck to see if could find him again with the spotlight and follow him to see just how big he was.. anyway, i sit there for about two minutes and i lipsqueak a few times and catch movement about 100 yards to my left above the pond and its a fox coming down the bank just above the pond.. the fox mills around the pond walks back up the bank and makes a circle around the briarpatches and darts off. heres where it gets interesting.. i didnt think anything of it until friday night i was at the barn around 8 oclock feeding the horses and had my coon light on and walked outside and shined it around the pasture only to see the same fox down below the barn again and he dissappears.. i wait about the same amount of time as last saturday but i didnt lip squeak this time and i kicked the light back on above the pond and the fox done the exact same thing as last sat... almost like he was walking the exact same path.. it really freaked me out.. well last night was no exception either.. but i was there at 9 oclock and he was back at in the field chasing rabbits again i guess.. are foxes actually this habitual or is this just a routine to chase prey they use.. our hillside is lined with persimmon trees too and the rabbits are unreal on our 250 acres.. its nothing to count over 50 rabbits in less than 30 minutes on my place at night just shining.. so i know what there doing in the pastures at night but for that fox to walk almost the exact same path every night.. was really weird and alittle exciting to watch at the same time..

i was always told by the trappers in our area that foxes will walk almost the exact same trails when they travel.. is this true even in reguards to the way they hunt in basically wide open pastures???

Of course they will repeat a routine if it is productive. That sounds like a very good food source. I believe lots of foxes mainly prey on very small rabbits and mice, which would lead them to your yard and barn. Ever heard of a game trail? They will routinely follow the same path. I belive if food and water is avail their home range will stay very small, but they sould also wander out of boardum and keeping their home range established and in check. Thats not to say they they will show up every night, but its very likely.

I don't know about foxes, but when left undisturbed a coyote is so habitual that you can almost set you watch by him.

Back home in Missouri we had one that would cross two wide open fields and a county road every morning between 7:00 and 7:10, in the wintertime. I suppose he was returning home from his nightly hunts. His core area was a thick patch of "posted" timber just north of that county road.
