Gamo air rifles... junk?

I'm looking at getting a new air rifle, and have read different things on different manufactures. I was considering a Gamo but then started seeing that people actually were not to pleased with Gamo's products...? They said they were junk. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif That really surprised me. I've read that some people liked them and some people didn't on this site. But there were only a couple people who said what they thought. So my question is if you have a Gamo rifle, do you think they are overal good quality? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gifAccurate? Durable? The specific model I was leaning tawords was the new Shadow Sport. Or should I look into Beeman, Benjamin Sheridan or some other manufacture like that. Thanks.

I had a gamo hunter 220 (.177@1000fps) that lasted me better than 10,000 rounds. That is alot of shots. It was quite accurate and very powerful...still have it in the cabinet but it now has a loose/worn hinge pin that causes erratic shots. But it still cocks hard and will diesel a good puff from the compression.

They are good airguns that are reasonably priced. Dont try to compare them with higher priced/quality european rifles. However, they are miles ahead of the chinese stuff in quality.

My gamo took alot of squirrels, crows, cats, coon, starlings etc. I'd have another except for being in an open area that goes beyond airgun capabilities.

ps...hello from charlevoix!

Are they good quality? Absolutely not! The fit and finish is poor, they rattle like a Yugo on a gravel road and they aren't the cutest puppy in the litter.

Are they accurate? Depends on the same things as other air powered rifles. Shooter technique, pellet selection, expectations, etc. But they are accurate enough to take 2 feral cats, 1 raccoon and a skunk within the last week. All one shot head shots at ranges from 15 feet to 35 yards (the skunk, didn't want to get any closer!).

Will it last? There are reports on some other boards of thousands of shots fired without any problems.

Like most hunting equipment choices, it comes down to what you want and how much you want to spend.

I am happy with mine. I consider it a good value and it does exactly what I wanted it do. Not high expectations, but met at a minimal cost.

Also be aware that there is a current recall on some models for accidental discharge.

i got a hunter 440, I LOVE IT! id say iv got 3,000 + shots..1/2in 5 shot groups @ 25 yards and iv got a pic to prove it!

Beeman R1, I love it!! I got the 20 cal though. It seems to do better in the wind. Kinda spendy, but I have had mine for about 13 years, and still shoots like a dream.

r1 is a good rifle but...if you got 600 dollers to drop on it go 4 it....you can get a nice pcp and pump 4 that kinda cash..im getting a rws 34 in .22 cal 4 x=mas..cant wait!

i have the 640 carbine and i love it, its the most accurate airgun i've ever owned. but if you have the money the benjamin is the most high quality. i have one that is almost 50 years old and it still works like brand new. accuracy is a little sketchy but then again how long could the barrel possibly be expected to hold up

I have a gamo cfx royale it's a fixed barrel model. Not to knock break barrel guns but i've did alot of reading and from that reading they supposedly tend to start shooting lower and lower due to the barrel being cokked.
Midsouth sells the cfx synthetic stock model for $175 -a friend has that one w/the scope package and it shoots great.
After i learned HOW to shoot a magnum spring air gun mine absolutely amazed me.Also forget the lite pellets for the 1000fps guns ,the pellet breaks the sound barrier and in doing that starts to wobble -then wobble again as it drops back below the sound barrier. The 10.5gr pellets or heavier are the ticket -spend the money and get rws match grade flatnose ,roundnose ,the pointed are known for not being as accurate.
Get a scope that is designed for a magnum spring gun!
I have killed about 10 crows w/ mine and numerous pidgeons.
The cfx w/scope package is hard to beat for the money a friend has a weirach ? pronounced wy-ro -a german made gun -very nice but not worth double the price IMO..
Mine has 1500-1700 shots and only needs an occational tightening of the screws.Best of luck to you -Mike

Hey everybody, thanks for your input. I'm definatley will consider what everybody has said so far. Keep 'em comin!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have an old Gamo youth model I bought for my son...the 750 fps model. Not much to look at but very accurate. Many a squirrel has met his maker from that bad boy.

For the price they are a great gun... my son to make practice interesting shoots those little plastic army guy's out to 30 yards with his $99 Gamo.

The 220 Hunter was all I had for several years in the city/suburbs until I moved up here in northern michigan. I didnt/couldnt shoot a centerfire for over 15yrs. When preparing for my first rifle deer season since coming home I purchased a .270 and had no problem with hitting the bullseye or taking my first deer due to the many, many long sessions of target shooting with an airgun. That ugly/nasty gamo trigger really helped me in disciplined trigger pull, too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i got a gamo 220 hunter for xmas last year, after switching out 2 air rifles, (for the same 220 hunter) i decided that i would just take the air rifle back, and save up for a .22 lr, ( my first rifle next to air rifles)
the trigger was not good at all, and three that i had i returned because i could not get groups of any size at all, they would go from one side of the target to the other, at 10 yards. It was horrible

I just started shooting a Talon SS made by Air Force Inc that I love. This is a precharged air rifle meaning you fill the attached air tank from a scuba tank or with a pump. I shot a crow this morning at 48 yards according to the range finder and killed him instantly. The rifle has power settings from 2 to 10. I shot the crow with the power set on 4. At this power setting it will shoot the 22 pellet through 1/2 inch plywood at 30 yards and is very accurate. The gun has a shrouded barrel so it is very quiet. I can shoot it in my back yard without anyone noticing. Because of the power you must be careful about your back drop if you are in close to houses. At a power setting of 4 you can shoot the rifle between 200 and 300 times before you need to refill the air tank. At a power setting of 10 you only get about 15 shots but it is powerful enough to killa fox at moderate range. Check these out at:www.pyramydair.com also: www.talonownersgroup.com

were did everybody buy there gamo's. ive been looking for one my self

Dunhams. Got the combo for 170.00. If you get the combo be sure to locktite the scope mounting screws after you get it sighted in.

I had to use film negative strips under the scope on the back mount to get it within sight adjustment. If this is the case with yours then save the loctite for when you get it close to on target.

Mine was kept sighted in at 35yds. I could sight on 50yds by using the bottom post on the reticle. Seemed to hit the target well for those longer shots at starlings.

In your case that is a good way to go. For those of us in the city (where I used to live) the airgun is the only way to go for suburban (safe) animal control.

When people asked me why I didnt spend at least 300.00 on an airgun I simply told them if I spend that much it better go BANG!
