Last night’s coyote hunt was with Alex and my friend Brian. Brian only joined for a couple of stands but still managed to drop one of these coyotes.
Alex has been hunting coyotes with me for a few years now, and while he’s had some success, it’s been a journey of learning—plenty of missed shots along the way. But last night, something just clicked. He was quick on the optic, confident, and started dropping coyotes like he’d been doing it for decades.
At one stand, we stopped by the landowner’s house for a chat before heading out. I pointed to his barn and told him we’d be setting up right behind it in the shadow of his yard light. We shot one there, and the second tried to get downwind of us. Luckily, the scent from the house threw it off enough to not spook it as bad. As it was leaving, it circled in front of us, about 250 yards out, it made its final mistake.
Alex turns 18 this spring and is heading to Marine Corps boot camp this summer. I told him last night that he’s going to have a head start over a lot of recruits when it comes to basic rifle marksmanship. It’s been great watching his progress and knowing these skills are building a solid foundation for what’s ahead.
I love watching these animals work their way into the call.
