Fresh cut corn and bright moon

I’ve made 3 sets the last couple nights on properties that just got the corn off. Nights have been cold, clear and bright with the moon approaching Full. Coyotes haven’t been cooperative, but in 3 sets on 3 properties, I have called in a pair of Grey fox and 2 red fox. Better than nothing I suppose.

I did get a group of coyotes fired up last night on another property nearby. Good to know they’re around. I’ll get after them as soon as that guy gets rid of the corn.

Just thought I’d post something while I’m waiting for things to turn around. Lol..

Keep after them. Michigan has some weird night hunting laws. There is a quiet period from 11/10 go 11/14 right before gun season so you can only use rimfire in my neck of the woods. Also can only use rimfire during the deer season itself. Kind of dumb if you ask me. If I wanted to break the law why would I wait till gun season to shoot a deer in the dark? I'm probably just gonna wait, catch up on some sleep, and hunt them hard in December.

NY was rimfire or shotgun at night for a long time. That changed for the better some time ago but we still have some crazy laws. Can use any centerfire at night for furbearers if that particular zone allows centerfire rifles for deer. If shotgun zone for deer, you can still use a centerfire rifle, but it must be sub 22 caliber. 204 Ruger or 17 Rem for example. 22 Hornet would be illegal. But only during deer season. And that is any deer season! Archery, gun or muzzleloader. Makes perfect sense if you’re an Albany politician!

Michigan just changed the law this year to allow center fire cartridges under .269" on public land, in non rifle zones. Previously only rimfire or shotguns allowed but they still have these restrictions during deer gun season. This is what happens when you let people who don't hunt or understand firearms make rules for hunters. Gotta always stay up to-date on the laws though, last thing you want is a citation from a CO.

Here in Mn the agricultural (southern or shotgun zone) no center fire rifle can be possessed 5days before, during, 2 days after firearms deer season. Rimfires and shotguns #4 buck or smaller. Handguns are legal, so I have considered a single shot handgun (must be .220 cal and larger).

To get back to the hunts I mentioned, as I said, the coyotes are being a bit stubborn. When this happens, I start digging into some of the sounds that don’t see much use. The last set I tried Johnny Stewart high pitch cottontail and brought in a red fox. It didn’t surprise me at all as it was the death of many reds and greys back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I have NEVER called a coyote in to that sound. I didn’t ruin that 100% track record that night either! Still 100% effective at not calling in a coyote for me! Lol…

I have called less overall as I've hunted them more. Here in central Michigan I have never had one come in to any kind of animal distress. They must be overcalled with those sounds. I have gotten a ton of answers on coyote vocals, particularly coyote groups or pairs. I also had a male answer and come to a male coyote howl. He ran once he heard the safety click off and I have heard answers but never actually showed up again. Ever since the middle of October I have heard them very little, probably due to all the deer hunters around.
