LOL. If that had happened to my life long hunting buddy if he borrowed one of my rifles, he would have accused me of slipping him a dummy round and insisted I retrieve the coyote. Sure do miss that back and forth we both enjoyed for 60+ years.
One of my favorite memories is going on a hunt after a longer than usual hiatus and he missed a chip shot first rattle out of the box. I let him slide on that one since it had been a few months since last hunt. We moved to other end of ranch and darn if he didn't miss a standing broadside shot @ less than 100 yards. I didn't say anything either at first because he was smarting pretty bad, but on the way to the next stand (in all earnestness) I asked him if he would like to check the zero on his rifle. H declined and I said, "we don't have to go to the range, I have a coffee can in the back of the jeep we can set up". His reply was, "No, I don't want to put a hole in your can."
That did it, I couldn't resist and replied, "Not much chance of that." The remainder of that ride was total silence. RIP, Don.
