Favorite Caliber

LOL, wow no taxes, must be nice. You got to remember im in california. It costs about 100 bucks to load up 50 rounds of .300 win mag. I dont reuse my cases cuz they weaken every time You resize them and im just finiky about that. But I this guy who posted this might not want to spend hundreds of dollars on dies and resizers and case polishers and case trimmers and scales and not to mention bullets, brass, powder, and primers to load up his first batch of ammo.

You took one part of what I said and made it sound like thats all I said. Now you dont need a super magnum big joe sniper rifle to kill elk and deer. Many people kill em both with 30-30's every year. Please dont take things out of context and build on that. Thats just not cool. You dont want to steer this guy wrong and tell him he needs a super sniper magnum, and if he buys one im sure your gana hear it after he buys a couple boxes of yes 40 dollar plus ammo and has a nice sour shoulder.

verminator, lol wow of course you can resize and reuse cases. I hate trimming cases and I dont like using already fired cases, when U resize them it weakens the case, I just dont like it. And yes of course theres a hundred primers in a box. U think I didnt know that. In cali I guess stuff is just too darn exspensive no thanx to the arnold and all the hippies in california. Wow, how could some one hand load and not know U can reuse cases. Come on now!!!!

I dont like tumblin brass and trimmin cases, so im lazy. LOL

i like my 300 mag for elk 243 for antelope and whitetail 270 for muleys. if i could find some game those won't work for I'd have a excuse to buy a new rifle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
I've tried lots of coyote rifles but like my 243 best for them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I've tried 22lr, 22 mag, 17 rem, 223, 22-250, 220 swift,223 short mag, 243, 270, 30-0-6, 270 weatherby mag, 7mm, and 300 mag. if i was a rich man I'd try out a bunch more. maybe tomorrow a 50 bmg sounds fun ha ha /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
my all time favorite was a ben pearson renigade 2 compound bow. now i'm shooting a mathews but not nearly as well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

News flash, 308 is about a 800 yard deer rifle at most, and about a 600 yard elk rifle.

I hunt elk with a .308 and I wouldn't try a shot over 450 yds.
They're tough to kill, and the .308 bleeds off too much energy at 600 to shoot through one. I don't like animals to get away wounded and there's hardly ever a tracking snow here, so if they aren't leaving a decent blood trail, I'll lose them.
.300 Win. Mag. or bigger is a lot better elk round if you want to try 500 yard or longer shots.

7mm rem mag ive taken deer, elk, yote, and to many hogs. Most all were one shot kills. But the 30-06 is my second choice. Both are poplar calibers and can get ammo most any where. With the 7mm I use 120 grain handloads for deer and 150 for my hogs. But you need to pick what you shoot well and always use enough gun for the meanest critter in the woods.

.30-06, There is nothing in North America that can't be handily dispatched with an 06. Extremely wide range of projectiles, Factory fodder can be found anywhere, it's been around for 102 years so I think the bugs have been worked out. Oh! and I almost forgot.....It can be made to be scary accurate.

I'll put in my vote...........

.338 Win Mag

Overkill???? Yes.

I have never had a deer, elk, or antelope complain about it.

In fact, I don't recall a single animal moving more that about 25 feet from where they were shot. It works for me.

But really in the dusty old world of classic old school cartridges (yawn) that do just fine, the .30-06 makes the most since. I'd still pick a 7mm Rem Mag over it.........

KYOTEKILLER25: Sounds to me like you are full of it! The distances that you discuss are not realistic! But that is why Forums information should not be believed! Only used for BSing! Most Forum users are Jr High kids who read books! But who checks ID?

GETFOXY:, You would not be going wrong by shooting a .280 Remington! Bullet selection is very broad and it will stop an Elk at 300 yard ( 175 gr. Partition) as well as a gopher at 200 yds with a little bullet! A lot of fun to shoot too! Another good one would be a 7/08 or a 7 x 57 as long as you practiced shot placement! A lot less recoil that any previously discussed!

My qualifications: 71 Yrs of age and the last time I bought a factory cartridge was in 1969! ( except .22s and hunting shotshells). Last week I shot an antelope with a .41 Magnum Redhawk pistol and another with a 7.7 Jap (31" bbl & iron sights) with a bullet that I cast myself with linotype!

GETFOXY, good luck and good hunting! If you get a chance, come WEST! but not as far as Califorica, Oregon or Washington! Commie states those three! Wyoming,Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and a few others!

I never saw where foxy was going to be trying LR hunting??? Kyote, i agree with you but it is totally irrelavent to the question asked, that being said, you also have a very abrasive attitude towards anyone who has an opnion that is diffrent than you.

Foxy, you do not need a super wizband magnum to kill an elk or a black bear. The .308 that was mentiond will work just fine at normal ranges. I remember reading a statistic that more deer and elk have been killed with a .30-30 than any other round in the world. Pick one that you can shoot with confidence, and that you are aware of your as well as teh firearms capabilitis. Good luck.

Actually, only the Western sides of those states are Commie, the Eastern sides are just like Idaho.

I'm living amongst the Commies, but I vote against them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I was raised in Idaho, so I know what you're saying.
