I’ve been getting my butt kicked the last couple times I’ve gone out. Coyotes have been quiet and call shy. I figure I should probably take a break for a little bit and dive into some other hobbies for a bit. But I had to get after it one more time today.
In typical fashion, I decided to go for a long hike into some secluded cuts. Walked 7.8 miles today and made 5 stands. I blanked on the first 4 and couldn’t even get a response, despite tracks everywhere.
Made it to the last cut and immediately spotted two coyotes in the bottom, about 1,010 yards away. I called to that pair for about 20 minutes and definitely had the females attention. She just wasn’t sure if she wanted to commit. Finally, a combination of pound town and pup distress got her fired up enough to come over. Of course the male reluctantly followed along behind her haha.
I purposely set up with the crosswind and planned on taking a longer shot before anything got down wind. Well they came on a string towards the down wind and I had to stop them at 386 yards with a howl. The female was the lead and I dumped her. The male took off up the opposite hill and stopped at 750 yards. I was planning on slinging some lead but he started running back down the hill.
I had to move a bit to get on him and ran out of cant on my tripod. He stopped right under me and a wiffed an east 150 yard shot over his back. He’s now sprinting straight away from me and I sent a bullet just over his head. By the time I got on him again, he was definitely getting out there a ways so I gave him a bigger lead and sent a 80 grain Eldvt right into him. He cartwheeled end over end and snow was fling everywhere. Was one of the coolest shots I’ve made to date. I ended up ranging him right at 350 yards. He was a big old dark male and the female was a smaller lite colored dog.
I figured I would end my ND winter calling season on that high note.
Sorry about the blurr in the video, my tiggercam is broken and I cant get it to focus very well anymore. Going to have to send it in for repair or start filming with an actual camera. I uploaded the whole video to show how it all ended up playing out. The first 15 seconds are decent and then you can skip ahead to about the 3:40 minute mark if you don’t want to get motion sick.
