Ok, I’m for sure done thermal hunting for the season. Well, that’s what I told my wife anyways….
Was the first night using my helmet mounted scanner and I’m definitely a fan of being hands free now.
I only hit 4 spots last night and idea was to target coyotes I’ve previously missed or haven’t been able to trick this past season.
The first spot, I’ve hit 4 times since November. In total, I’ve killed 8 coyotes at this spot and there’s always more spouting off when I’m leaving. So starting out, I got one to respond but it wasn’t coming after 15 minutes. I got it and a bunch of other unresponsive coyotes fired up with Cal Taylor’s new vocal “territorial”. Eventually a coyote popped up near my downwind. It wouldn’t commit and sat down on a clay hill. I center punched him at 240 yards. My shot activated video didn’t turn on for some reason so I don’t have that video unfortunately. Then the moon came out in all of its bright glory.
The second spot was behind a buddy’s house. He’s got a big creek on his land and it’s infested with coyotes. I previously called in 6 coyotes all at once back in January. Only
Got two out of that group and struck out back in February. This time around, I got a pair fired up with “territorial” and hit them with a fight call to get them committed. I shot the lead female coyote around 100 yards. Couldn’t get the other coyote to come back.
The third stand, I moved down the creek about a mile and got a coyote responding to the vocals and nutty nut hatch (first time I’ve ever had luck with that sound). I shot him a couple times around 140 yards.
The last stand was epic. It basically a huge badland cliff face. It funnels into a slim pinch point and would require some serious climbing to get down. Now I’m dumb but there’s no way I’m climbing down this loose clay at night and solo. Usually, I walk in from the bottom a couple miles down the road. This time the wind only worked for me to stand at the cliff edge and leave myself completely sky-lined. I chose to hit this spot because I found a lot of denning coyotes in this area last March. It’s also got a ton of deer and turkeys in the area.
So I started with some mfk C’mere lonely howls. Got a very distant response but no commits after the 10 minute mark. I fired off Cals Territorial and had multiple pissed of
Coyote responses in two different directions. I immediately played some Nutty Nut hatch and saw two distant coyotes racing in from below. They came right into the funnel of death and I hammered the first one with a very steep downward 120 yard shot. The other coyote took off but I think I called it back about 3 minutes later with some pound town. That second one was so hesitant to come in but it eventually took the same path as the first one and I shot it around 140 yards. Had to put another bullet into that one after it ran off a bit. After that second one, my fox bang went off for a bit and I could hear a barking coyote somewhere in the cliffs and trees. I went silent for a bit then fired off Cals sound again. Shortly after, I spotted the coyote at the bottom of the cliffs. It was right at 202 yards and I stoned that one. That shot was a bit more across the pinch point and not as steep.
Now I’ve called in a lot of double, triples, quads, etc but I’ve never been able to get more than a double. Tonight was my first triple and I could t even get down the cliff to get a picture haha. Regardless, I decided to end my thermal season on that high note.
End of season pressured coyotes
