I got out for a couple sets tonight. First set was uneventful, other than watching a barred owl land next to my caller.
Second set was at a sheep farm I hunt. He owns both sides of the road, and one side works for an east or southeast wind. The next property over to the north is off limits and it’s probably a 200 acre field with lots of brush. As I was walking in a couple coyotes were making some noise! They were way off on the opposite side of that field, and I had to get them to cross it and come through a brushy overgrown hedgerow, and onto the property I have permission to hunt.
While they were still mouthing off, I hit them with MFK Roo Excited Female howls, and followed it up with a series of Bustin Fur Audio Coda Beans Duo. The coyotes made one more series of lip service and went quiet. I went quiet and started scanning up and down the hedgerow. After a few minutes I seen a heat signature in the hedgerow, then a second a ways to the right. They didnt commit to coming through it completely, but worked their way into the wind. I could see bits and pieces of them as they were working towards the east. Finally one popped out into my side of the trees and into the field I could shoot. 75 gr V-max from the 243 dumped this young female without a twitch. About 150 yard shot.
There were actually 2 other coyotes with her. After the shot they tore off and I got them to stop with MFK Boon 16 week pup distress. I could have shot either of them if I had permission! They were approximately 250 yards and bitching me out! I gave them a little back. They stuck around, but I couldn’t pull em in a second time.
So happy our snow is finally manageable. Lots of south facing fields are almost clear. I’m taking advantage of that fact every chance I get! Creeping in on season’s end and I’m playing catch up!
