DIY Tactical Bolt Knob?

I have a Browning A-Bolt I want to put a tactical bolt handle on. I work at a metal shop so I was thinking that I could make a knob on the metal lathe, cut off the old knob, thread the bolt handle and the knob the same and I'd be good to go. Think this would work? I want to do the same to my Savage .17 HMR as well, maybe start with the Savage and see how it goes. Would this work?

You could just machine a bigger knob that slips over the old knob and uses a set screw. It could be make from metal, plastic, rubber, or whatever. Then make up a bunch and sell them to other folks hunting in cold weather.

You need around half an inch of thread. If you cut the knob off you'll end up too short on the handle. Turn down and thread the existing knob and you'll be fine. Unless you really want to make your own knob Midway sells some that I've used a few times for $10. You can't beat it

I purchased the bolt body from Sharp Shooters Supply. He has a new type of paint that he uses thats tougher than nails and suposedly solvent resistant. He has many different colors.
The rifle is one Ive been putting together for quite some time now, I think its finally finished now. Its a 26" shilen 8 twist (223AI) with Mcmillan silouette stock in marble blue. Ken Ferrel based painted blue holding a sightron 6-24X scope and a Sharp Shooters Supply trued single shot action with [beeep] comp trigger.
The factory trigger guard didnt fit like I wanted.

ANSCHUTZ® THUMBHOLE

The Anschutz® Thumbhole stock was designed for the 54:18 Repeater. This factory reproduction is one of the most popular silhouette stocks offered. It can also be used for all Anschutz® 54 actions. Available in right hand only.

Had a few people asking which stock Im using. Trust me, its as comfortable as it looks too.

dang outlaw that is one slick rifle! I'm not quite sure what you mean by turning down the old knob...The A-Bolt will have enough room still if I cut it off, but the Savage won't.

A mill is your best bet but it can be done with a bench grinder. take a little material at a time trying to keep it as cylindrical as possible. If you want I can give you the std. thread size and outside dimension to turn the handle to if you're going to buy a knob. If you're going to make one then the specs are up to you. JB

I'll do it with a bench grinder and finish it off with something that takes off a little less metal. I think i'm going to make a knob just so it is exactly how I want it. Thanks again for the info, hope to have it done in the next couple of weeks.

One last thing to remember if you plan to make the bolt knob yourself ..........make sure it clears your scope with the bolt open. Everything else sounds good to go. Sounds like a fun project, good luck

I used a grinder to get the rough size and finished it off with a belt sander. Once its threaded, the new knob should screw right on. I put JBs weld on my threads just to keep it from backing back off while hunting and close up any loose fitting threads.
