Day before and after Christmas

Hunted 3 new properties tonight, one of which has a fox problem getting her and her neighbor's chickens. I killed a red there and saw another and since this is why I am allowed to coyote hunt there I will be back.
Started out about 6pm the 23rd. Had no coyote action or audio until in my 5th set. I got a response to my howls a fair distance away and up over the ridge. Rain is predicted at 1:30 but I decide to 'climb the summit'. I did 3-4 min of low prey then did a young male howl and was sitting in silence when this female shows up at 13min. I stayed in set for another 15 running kiyi and fight sounds to no avail. As I was walking to her for the pic and recovery the rain started, and I was about a half mile from the car but it was all downhill except the last 100yds :giggle: . Female 90yds 1:15am 12/24/24
12/26 I am feeling kinda under the weather but went for a couple of sets. The first set produced a male and should have been a double.
Nothing to 7-8min of low stuff and some silence then I played a howl. Call was about 40 to my North and the wind was from the East. Immediately they answered from the E and 1 was within 100-150 from the sound of it. I hit record because I am only about 20-30yds from the field edge to my E and it is 'rabbit cover' across the fence! Well ,15min later and no show.
I hit a fight, and it wasn't long when I see flashes of white coming through the brush but further N than I was expecting. Shut the call off, got positioned and shot the first. Racked another in while kiyiing and the second one stopped. I get settled and CLICK! Chit! Had to really pull on the handle to get the bolt to move. Got another round in but it would not make another stop.
I run a cloth shell deflector attached to my scope so my mts fall between my tripod legs and I think it must have got pinched in the bolt--will have to look it over and maybe redesign after everyone leaves this weekend though I have not had an issue since coming up with it several months ago.
Stayed in set for a total of 75min as the other would 'let me know' it was still in the hollow once in a while. The next set produced nada.
Family is all coming in for the weekend through Jan. 1, so my 2024 hunting is over but ended with 2 good nights and a total of 52 for the year. Male 33min 140yds

Good shooting on the two. Stoned them right where they stood. I think I already asked but what are you shooting? Enjoy time with your family. 52 for the year is great. Keep stacking them.

Mike,
Great shooting.
When I use to shoot an AR I had a small pouch / curtain to keep the brass. But the AR ejects much faster and harder than your bolt action, how about putting a small weight in the bottom-just enough to keep a little tension so it's away from your action.

Bill, I have 3 split shots pinched to the bottom of it, thanks for the suggestion. Mike
I came down with bronchitis Friday so will have some time to check it out, might go with a stiffer cloth or thin leather instead of the tee shirt material.
