Coyote pelt/Fur penetration

For you shotgun hunters… has anyone tried #2 lead or BB lead for coyotes and do you think thicker winter fur can cause deficient penetration. What’s the best 4 buck factory you’ve tried? I’m weighing options and patterns for next season. So far the 4 buck isn’t patterning well. Help?

I use/used Federal copper plate BB, Federal copper plated #4bk , Dead coyote T shot . They all work given the proper choke and distance of shot.

If you're going to go with lead BB loads, I suggest you try the Winchester Varmint-X BB loads. They will drop coyotes dead and have proven to pattern very well for me. Just keep your ranges within reason for the load and they'll get it done. 50 yards max and under, and you should be good if you hit them good with a nice patterning shotgun.

Do not shortchange the patterning process. I second what cropdamage suggested... Go read the Shotgun Patterning thread. Invaluable information from some real shotgun killers on there!

Will do, I found some 4 Buck in the Winchester V-X, but the Nelli M2 didn’t like it. I’m using extended chokes in size .695 and .700 . So far 4 buck Federals are ok but not consistent. Same with the Steel BB in several manufacturers but I feel like if I tried lead BB I think it might improve. I hunt woodlands and most shots are within 40 yards, but now and then my set ain’t quite right and I get one hanging up at 50 or 60. I love to be able to have confidence at that range. My 4 shot is awesome at that range but is it enough to kill?? Hhhm?

I wouldn't waste my time with steel waterfowl loads.

Screw in a turkey choke and test the lead BB and 4 buck. Killed fox and coyote with both in that combo .
For the best of the best, TSS rules, but it's not cheap.

Don't shoot steel BB shot on coyotes, steel shot dose not penetrate very deep. I wouldn't use lead #2 shot on coyotes unless you plan on head shooting them at 30 yards and less. I had decent results killing and breaking down 20 to 35 pound coyotes with lead BB shot out to about 45 yards. Many times I had to shoot coyotes with lead BB shot 2 or 3 times to put them down.

When I got the KPY Shotshell Ballistics program I decided I wanted to use 3.70" of 20% gel penetration for what I wanted in my shotgun coyote loads. I based this 3.70" of gel penetration for coyotes after seeing well over 100 coyotes killed with
Federal Premium 3" 1-7/8 oz of copper coated lead BB loads.

From KPY Shotshell Ballistics
1450 fps steel "T" shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 20.8 yards, with about 65 pellets in 1-1/4 oz.
1300 fps lead #2 shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 19.6 yards, with about 110 pellets in 1-1/4 oz.
1300 fps lead BB shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 46.1 yards, with about 77 pellets in 1-1/2 oz.
1300 fps TSS #4 shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 78.9 yards, with about 104 pellets in 1-1/4 oz.
Lead number 4 buckshot gets way more penetration than what is needed and it only has about 41 pellets in 1-7/8 oz of shot in a 3" factory load.

federal or remington 2 3/4 or 3 inch # 4 buckshot with a carlsons dead coyote choke out of my mossberg 940 semi auto jerry miculek model drops em out to 50 yards. coyote, raccoon, fox and bobcat....winchester varmint BB loads work great too. more pellets in the BB load. all my shotgun kills have been in the winter, they drop right there and dont move...well, maybe blink a little

Estate 12ga 2 3/4 inch 4b is terrible, Fed/Rem has worked well for me, out to 40 yards or bit more. Used Win copper plated Bb's when there were more fox than coyote. When I thought a coyote may show up before/instead of a fox, the 3rd rd would be 4b.

Fiocchi Feild Dynamics 2 3/4 nickel plated #4 buck with a Carlsons Coyote Choke has worked well for me out to about 40 yards. Penetrates much better than plain lead #4.
