Coyote Hearing vs Human Hearing?

Hi All,

Does anyone know of any PEER REVIEWED studies on how well coyotes can hear vs humans? I'm not talking about frequency ranges, but strictly distances. I have read many anecdotal stories, but I would love to get some evidence based facts. I can't seem to find any online.

Thanks!

I'd like to read a report on that.

Most of us will have stories of lip-sqeaking, and a coyote appears 4-500yds out, staring at us intently.

I read a document on pigeons, plain old pigeons, and the article said pigeons are suspected of being able to hear both oceans as they fly above Chicago.

I asked a guy I know and he said "
Coyotes have much better hearing than humans, with a hearing range of up to 45,000 hertz (Hz) compared to the human range of 20–20,000 Hz:

Coyotes use their hearing to detect prey and avoid danger. They can also likely discern individual howls from a distance of three miles or more on a calm night. "

I don’t think anyone can truly understand hearing abilities in wild animals. Take a turkey for example. I can call a bird out West in from 500yds away and that bird will come straight to the exact spot I was calling from. Yet, when he’s coming in I can whisper loudly to my partner and they don’t hear it.
Now think about coyotes, how many have you seen run straight to a blaring call that would hurt my ears, yet they’ll run in and attack it if it looks like prey.
I do think they can hear from a great distance, but sometimes their up close actions dictate they’re about deaf. Heck, there’s videos on here with hunters talking about taking shots and it doesn’t seem to bother the coyotes. Then again, there’s comments on here about calls blaring and they hear the sound of the safety and bolting.
