I got access to some private land in co and was told that i could get elk tags over the counter for private land. Is this correct? If it's correct is it the same for mule deer?
Thanks
Non-resident Deer $329 if drawn
Non-resident Elk Bull or either Sex $546 (draw and over the counter if available)
Non-resident Elk Cow $251 (draw and over the counter if available)
All the pawnee is public there is some area's with private inside the bounderies. just be careful and always know where you are at. Trespassing isn't taken lightly in our state. Acessibility is very good... It's drawing the tag that sucks.
I hunt mainly private land for antelope.
Last year in unit 118 they issued only 30 more tags than previous years.
The only public land in 118 is Turkey Track Wildlife area along Squirrel Creek and Peyton Highway.
Long story short....
27 cars with 2-5 people per car
Looked like a pumpkin patch with orange opening morning
I didn't hunt last year. I was afraid of getting shot. I was on private land adjacent to this parcel.
With the price of gas and the price of groceries there were a lot of hunters on public land.
In the last 20 years I have only seen about 20 hunters in unit 118 each year.
I haven't looked at the PP's but even for a resident tags are pretty hard to draw. Some of the areas down in the boonies of SE Colorado may only take a few points. Most of the ones in the northern half of the state take 6-8, up too 12. I put in for a tag every year, but, never draw it. Should be up to 6 or 7 points. We go out of state to hunt goats every year. Crying shame a man can't draw a tag in his own friggin state.
I draw CO antelope every year and have no reason to think I won't this year. There is a trick to it and it works without fail. I would suggest you read the big game brochure carefully because the DOW basically tells you how to do this.
Grew up hunting antelope on the Pawnee back when we would leave home on opening morning get our bucks and be back home in Greeley for breakfast on the same day. Now the roads are all lined with hunters on opening day and it looks like a turkey shoot.
It probably depends on the area the private land is in...and also depends on weather you want a buck or doe tag. I have access to private land as well but there are certain areas that require 4+ preference points for bucks and none for does.
This year I applied for a doe tag on private (I could use the meat - came up with no tag last year in my trustworthy elk spot)....and I applied for a tag in Wyoming. I will probably get drawn in Wyoming...not sure about Colorado.
I've applied to Pawnee Grasslands and have never drawn there. I think last year it took 8 points for a male with rifle. You have a better chance drawing with a bow and they do reserve some licenses for out of state residents. Here's a link to the draw stats for antelope.... http://wildlife.state.co.us/NR/rdonlyres...rencePoints.pdf
I would not wait to to do left over tags this year. Just today teh local news said that the number of tags were going to be cut to the point that not many lefto over tags for elk would be availible.
Let us know where you talking about. I know here in NW Colorado they finally have the herd at objective. So that means a bunch of tags are going to be cut. If you really want to come and hunt i would not wait to see if left overs availible, even on private land.
