Buffalo shooting with the 22

I was cruising through the predator hunting site and found a fella asking about the .22 Mag. I replied and thought I would post my experience here as well. I shoot hundreds of buffalo every year. There are three different caliber of buffalo in my opinion. .22 LR for calves, .22 Mag for cows and young up to 2 yrs. or a little more, and centerfire for 1600 lb or bigger. I have used the .223 for the big boys but have found the 25-06 to be preferable. A 75g hollow point at real close range, or a 100g Nosler BT when they're out in the field. Brain shots only. So far I've not had to use a finishing shot with the 25. So point being. If the .22 Mag can kill the largest land animal native to our continent then why-ever do we mess around with the other guns. ...Oh ya. Now I remember. Because we can!!

I can hear the flames whistling towards us!!!

A buffalo is a cow. I could probably kick one to death cuz it'd sit there and let me.

Don't mistake size for difficulty to kill.

I'd like to watch (from a safe distance of course) you try and take a Grizz with a .22 mag. There was one up here on kodiak (I think) that they called "ol' groaner" because for years they'd hear this bear just a howling away like it was in the most excrutiating pain ever. Finally a hunter killed him, and when they skinned and cleaned him they found a .30 cal slug had went through one side of his face and embedded i nthe jaw of the other, where it would grind against the bone when he chewed. He lived liek that for years.

I admit, the .22 lr and the .22 mag are kick-butt little rounds. I chuckle to myself when people say that only experts and the most advanced, proficient, sure-shot sniper predator control agents should attempt to use them on fox and coyotes.

But I wouldn't, by any stretch of the imagination call it a "buffalo round" and that the only reason to ever buy a larger calber is "because we can"

Where do you live that you can shoot that many buffalo? Do you raise them? Farm buffalo? hmmm...

I am not sure what reasoning you are using to tout the ability of sub calibers to dispatch these animals. I am quite positive that these cartridges are very capable in VERY controlled circumstances. But as a hunter and representative of the hunting community I cannot recommend, condone or place any value in using such small calibers on this size of an animal. My real concern is whether these calibers are LEGAL for what you are doing. You don't mention whether you are hunting, ranching, or slaughtering these animals. In any event, I would like to politely ask you to refrain from espousing the use of these potentially illegal cartridges. I am not trying to jump on your case, only to help present us, Predator Masters, in the correct light.

Thanks for your help in this matter,

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I am a butcher, and that the circumstances are very controlled. My comments were made in humour. The reason I use the smallest caliber I can is because people save and sell the skulls for art. No offence. Personally I would like to try my .50 blackpowder on one of those bison but I'm afraid I might light one of the critters on fire with the muzzle flash. Once again I appologize if I was misleading. I hereby formally submit that buffalo shooting should not be done with a .22 unless circumstances are completely controlled. Do not try this at home! And by the way. Do not attempt to kick a buffalo to death. They are not "tame" and will kill you. A trapper here in Alberta was killed last month by a buffalo that was "domesticated" and was at large. Perhaps only Alaskans are qualified for this endevour. I'm sure there are a lot of buffalo up there. I would also check with your local authorities and a phycyiatrist before attempting to kick a bison to death. Idon't think it's legal. It's 6:17 a.m. here and I'm off to work. We have half a dozen elk and 15 or so whitetails to do today as well as the regular stuff so that will be interesting. The "exotics" make a much more concentrated effort to escape and they are better jumpers than beef or hogs. I think I will use a .22 today. [disclaimer}Do not try this at home.

Trigger,

I very much appreciate your clarification. I would imagine that the information you gather and things that you see would be very interesting to hear about. Again, It makes a huge difference in understanding your point of view with the additional information. As stated before the .22 is indeed a very lethal cartridge and it is very enlightening to hear that even the mighty buffalo can be felled to such a miniscule cartridge. Just don't try it at home.

Well i think the 22 calibers are very potent however i would not recommend to anywone taking anyhting bigger than a deer sized game with one. The results could be catastrofic.
