What bullet were you using? In 223, I used 55 gr. NBT for coyotes and cats & they performed well; not a lot of damage unless direct shoulder hit. ETA: I can't remember shooting a cat w/the 243WSSM but the 87Gr. Hornady HP's didn't tear up coyotes too bad for that caliber either.

85gr sierra game king i was shooting will decapitate a fox, but if it misses bone its not too violent.

85 sierra hpgk... wasn't my ideal choice for a cat, but it did very well.
