Being a houndsman

I started out hunting with 3 men who were all close friends. They all had greyhounds. I did not have a hound initially. But rode with 2 of them as we hunted. We spot/stalked Red Fox initially, Then the coyotes a few years later. During those years, 2 of those men bought coyote trail hounds/scent hounds. One being a very large Black & Tan. Also 2 Walker trail hounds. They bought those trail hounds to hunt coyotes. I owned during those hunt years. 2 greyhounds, 1 staghound & 1 Russian Wolfhound. I hunted with my group from 1964-early 70's. Then I broke away to hunt on my own circa; 1970. I took what they taught me of the spot/stalking tactics. Over the following years. I improved the tactic of stalking bedded Red Fox & the coyotes. I got rid of my hounds circa; 1971. Then I became just a spot/stalker. I did however, occasionally hunt with my old houndsman group & other groups of houndsmen. During the years I hunted alone. I improved the tactic of stalking. By stalking in up & cross wind from a sleeper fox or coyote. That tactic, I called angled up wind(10:00/2:00 angle). Angled up wind. Put me behind the bedded canine & also crosswind. So that bedded canine could not see or scent me. It was the most perfect tactic. Because all I had to do was remain quiet enough. To get close for a shot.

During those years I seen 2 lone nomadic wolves while coyote hunting. I did see another wolf while not hunting. I also seen 2 mountain lions & 1 black bear. I seen another black bear while not hunting. As for the coyotes. I seen 1/2 dozen or so. Coyotes that were very large & odd looking. When I started hunting coyotes. I tried to kill every one of them. Not knowing much about their behaviors back in those days. So then I decided to give most of them a free pass. Just observe & learn their non-pressured behaviors. Because I found them to be an interesting canine.

I hunted from the gravel roads. As I scanned the terrain. I mostly hunted open rolling hills. However, I also hunted adjacent to timbered land. Timbered river & creek bottoms. Most coyotes prefer ground cover vs being bedded down out in the open. I hunted open flat land & rolling hills. Some hunt seasons I drove 4000 miles +. I hunted most days every month for many years.
