Beaver castor rubbed over meat…

It’s almost the end of the black bear hunting season here and I still haven’t been able to call one in close enough for a shot. I’ve got a week and a half left and really want to fill my freezer. I’m thinking to buy some beaver castor and rub some on meat and make a bait site. Then call from a setup nearby.

Anyone have any experience or advice with beaver castors or doing something like this?

I would not buy beaver castor for a coyote bait site. While castor is attractive to cats and other animals, I don't believe it would add anything significant to a coyote bait. If you're looking at buying raw castor from a trapper, you should just ask for the carcass. Everything that eats meat likes beaver. If all I have is one beaver for a bait, I'll hang it in a tree. You want the coyote to be able to get to it but not able to haul it off.

If you want to add an attractive odor, buy a trapping "call lure". Usually these have a good bit of skunk essence in them. A little dab goes a long ways.

Think he was asking about bear bait, but I could’ve misread it.
As far as using castor, yeah, I think everything will come to it. Heck, that’s the only reason I’ll trap beavers is to get their castor and oil.

If you know where to buy fresh castor, just get a couple whole beaver carcass. Realize that bear change food sources going into hibernation. They probably are carb loading, and may not want a big meal of meat(protein) prior to sleep. Just as they start on grasses when coming out of hibernating before eating proteins. The hibernation thing requires a major metabolism/digestion change in the bear. The latest I baited bear was last week of October, I didn't have any proteins out.

thank you for all the reply’s guys! I’m gonna pick up some coyote call lure from my local hunting store they sell it. Also spotstalkshoot, what time of season do you think calling for bears would be effective or not effective combined with some baiting?
