2020-2-29 coyote hunt

Got another coyote on video last night with the ATN x-sight 4K Pro 5-20. This one was at 120 yards and the scope's at the base 5 power.

I haven't been getting much action (nothing consistent anyway) on my carcass all winter. I've been lucky to get one coyote coming in a week based on my trail camera footage. Having quite a few hours logged with nothing to show for it, I decided to bring the FoxPro with me last night. Tried vole squeaks for a bit since fox season's still open but no response. After sitting for about an hour I started playing some coyote invitation howls. Stayed silent for about 10 minutes or so and played some female bark howls. This female came in shortly after those howls. This isn't the first time I've had this happen when utilizing a call while watching a bait sight. In my opinion I believe the sound of another coyote near the carcass makes them feel more comfortable coming in.

I'm really surprised she got up after the hit. She only went 10 yards tops, but the hit was perfect IMO and expected it to be DRT. After watching the video several times it appears that the cross hair in the video is slightly off (looks almost forward of the front leg to me) from what I remember seeing and isn't supported by the location of the entrance/exit wound which was tight behind the shoulder. You can also see the IR light on my camera turn on as she comes in. Anyway, all-in-all I'm really loving the ATN NV scope and 6.5 Creedmoor combo.

Great job on that. The view looks very good for digital. I am sure your eye could see better than the uploaded video appears, and it is quite good. The 5x base seems good at 120 yards. I have the 3-14x model for my 60 yard site.

In your experience with the x-sight videos, do you know or recall if the display brightness effects the video at all? I wouldn't think it would but just wondering. I'm happy with the 2 videos I've gotten so far with RAV. I think the only way to brighten it up would be to concentrate my IR light more on the target, but I like flooding it out a little more to cover my entire display. I wish ATN would give longer time running options for prior to the shot. Longest pre-shot time option is 15 seconds.

Nice hit and good job. They can be tough critters. I have the 3-14x model and very happy with it. Currently running 2 IR lights on mine. Use the standard one that came with it for occasional scanning and when something comes in. Use the IR Pro which is much much brighter and focused for take down. The IR Pro really lights up the video brightness compared to the standard IR light. I think the only way to brighten up the video is to have more focused or brighter light on the intended target - or at least thats my experience so far.

I don’t know that I can tell any difference. I think the brightness just affects the ocular view. I do wish the scope had a contrast adjustment.

As to the RAV function, I never could get that to work, maybe because my 6x45 in the AR platform doesn’t have enough recoil to activate it. I lost some good hog footage when relying on the RAV, so now I just do the manual button push to begin recording, which is very easy to do.

I am using a TR-38 850nm illuninator that has a 2,000 miliwat pill, got it from the UK. I have adjusted the illuminator head to give a brighter view, and have an adjustable mount to position the beam on the target. There is some darker areas around the edges in the view, but this adjustment allows me to see very well out to 160 yards, the furthest I have tried it. Most of my coyote shooting is around the 60 yard mark, with an occasional shot reaching out to maybe 75-80 yards, so the adjustment works fine at those distances, plus allowed me to take a 142 yard skunk that was a target of opportunity.

My son and I are thinking about a Georgia hog hunt soon and I plan to do some shooting with the 6x45 and 4k. A couple of years ago I used the X-Sight 2 to drop three hogs. The 4k is even better.

Make sure you not only have the RAV function activated on the menu, but you also have to press the right arrow button to turn it on. I only mention this because it didn't work for me until I re-tread the manual and discovered I wasn't using it correctly.

Also, after reading that part of the manual I saw that you can calibrate the RAV to the recoil of your rifle. I don't know that it will work for air gunners or rim fires, but I would imagine it would work with all center fire rifles.

I just don't want to have to remember to hit the right arrow button in the heat of the moment. Still have to remember to do it at the beginning of the hunt with RAV so I guess it's kinda 6 to one and a half dozen to the other....

Don't sweat it, I think a lot of us started doing the same thing after reading the ATN forums.

When you hit the right arrow button with the RAV function on, you will see the red record icon appear in the upper left hand corner of the display. It's my understanding that it is continuously recording at that point, but not saving anything (if that makes sense). It will save to the time you set before and after the shot upon recoil. Mines set for 15 seconds before and 15 seconds after. If you have the Obsidian4 app on your phone, you can connect to your scope with WiFi and upload the video to your phone in a matter of seconds.

Side note: I posted a comment on ATN's Instagram page asking if they'd consider upping the time option before the shot. To my surprise they responded. They said it is not in the works on the next firmware update but would consider it in the future. Short pre-shot footage is really my only issue with RAV.
