ALWAYS FACE DOWNWIND

I just had a close encounter with red fox!!
I set my decoy and sat downwind in a 3' hole in the snow with my back to some brush and with my face to the wind.....mistake!!!!

About 1 minute into the call I heard some scrambling in the brush behind me, tried to turn but was stuck and heard more scrambling.

15 minutes later when I had enough I squirmed out of my hole and I could see where a fox had dove through the brush , slammed the brakes and must have stood there for a bit before busting me because there were lots of tracks and then he took off where he came from.

He was literally 8 feet behind me!!!And I never saw him...

This keeps up I'll have to mount a bayonet on my varmint rifle for self-defence..

Always? Never, ever any other way?

Sorry you didn't get the fox. But NEVER sit in a 3' hole in the snow where you can't get turned around if you need to.

You're right on the mark.

I made a huge circle and few more stands and 2 miles later by snow machine, I worked my way downwind 1/4 mile up from his last position and I managed to call him in again. Unfortunately he busted me again and I couldn't get a shot. This time I got a good look.I stopped him but he was 150 yards away through tons of trees.

Hunting up here is done in wooded areas.
Many times you'll call em in and they're very close to you and you don't even know it until you move and you see the fresh tracks in the snow.
Usually where they sat watching until they busted you.

That's gonna change next week...CS-24B FOXPRO and decoy on it's way!!!!

Huh I was right?

There's lots of em right here in my yard here.
But you can't see them...too much bush..
My neighbour has a bunch of big coyotes, brush wolves in his yard too...he feeds them....he whistles before dark and they come in.!!
And sometimes they travel through my yard and across the highway in broad daylight but they use the wind and cover of the thick pine forest..they're really tough to spot...

Those who don't setup to watch the downwind of the sound source are missing out on a bunch of animals. Extremely important to watch downwind, if you are a hand caller. Looks like you got a good and fun lesson on it.

Good stuff.

Yep. If you hunt by yourself, you are going to miss a few no matter which way you face.

What???
Are there only two ways, here I thought they could come from any direction, 360°, but apparently in a crosswind there are only two possible directions they can come from, Thanks for clearing that up

+ 1 on that....I did that ONCE...Never again.Always a learning experience.

ok my bad sorry about that, I did know the difference in the coyote/wolf laws between southern and northern Ontario but didn't know fox had more than one law.
Ends the end of Feb up North at least, ends the end of Jan here.

So you know about wolf/coyote hunting in Ontario?

Did you know that some tree huggers who feed wolves in Southern Ontario lobbied the govt. to protect "their" wolves, so the gov't caved in and implemented a $10.00 wolf/coy. tag with a yearly limit of 2 in NORTHERN ONTARIO only!!

Then they have a year round open season for fox, wolf and coyote in Southern Ontario!!!
The M.N.R...(D.N.R.) keep screwing Northern Ontario.
Their policies are proving to be the most environmentally catastrophic detriment to Ontario's wildlife sustainability and biodiversity since the last great ice age.

The M.N.R. is rapidly turning hunting and fishing into criminal activities for all!!

I know better than most. Guided up there for 6 years from the first year the new law came into effect. Most expensive coyote's in the world with a limit of two for non residents.

It's really a joke, all year coyotes in the south compared to 2 a season in the north even for residents. Oh and just be happy you only have to pay $10 a coyote. Non residents are in it at least $600 for 2. Terrible laws.
