Advice wanted on 200yd Varmint/Golf Ball Match Shooting

One of my local clubs has some varmint/golf ball shooting matches coming up.
I’d like to give it a try, so looking for advice on equipment, rifle, and caliber choices.

I currently have 2 rifles I think may be worthy…Sako L46 .222 zrem zheavy Barrel, and a CZ 527 Varmint…idk if either is a good choice or if I should be thinking about a different rifle…6PPC is not allowed. I know 6BR is probably a top choice or other 6mm calibers.

I have a Protektor rear rest…looking at Grizzly or Shade Tree front rest, and adding a DR Greenlaw top for front rest. Not sure what else I would need.

Scope choice is still to be determined, was leaning towards a fixed power…likely a Sightron SII 36x

Any advice appreciated

Be sure and check the 6x reticle does not completely cover a golf ball @ 200. I think it is going to be close. I would prefer a variable if that is an option, so I could adjust the relationship between reticle and aiming point. If you are limited to the 6x the only option you would have if the GB is covered is to bracket the ball between vertical and horizontal crosshairs and adjust the POI accordingly.

I think he's going with a 36x

Your going to need a consistent .5 MOA rifle to even compete. Then you have to take in the range conditions, mirage, wind etc. Get out and practice and learn what your rifle is going to do.

Curious why no 6PPC but 6BR ok.

Darn bifocals, missed the 3..........I have found the variable's ability to adjust the ratio between target and reticle sure helps my old eyes .

.5MOA @ 200 is what my friend that competes suggested…Idk if my L46 will do that. Still trying to find a load it likes…shot it yesterday for 1st time, and was keyholing @ 50yds with 50gr Superformance Vmax…I think it’s a 1:16 twist, crown looks great, so don’t think it’s a barrel issue.
Scope power is unlimited. Caliber is unlimited as well other than no 6PPC.

I thought it was a rimfire game(match). Do you get sighters? At minimum for consistency you would need a custom barrel and a LIGHT trigger.

Unsure of all the rules, I emailed the club requesting more information, so hopefully will hear back soon…I have until June until the matches start.
I just started shooting IR 50/50 this year, so some equipment will be dual purpose. I can’t travel to most of the IR matches, so these local ones have my interest.

I shot NRA XTC matches for years. 200, 200 & 600 yards; iron sights, no artificial support. When club started shooting F class, I strapped my smallbore Unertl 20x scope and a bipod on my match rifle and tried a couple of matches but the mirage was so strong the target looked like a bowl of jello in a hurricane. Promptly took the scope and bipod off, put the irons back on and shot much better going forward. Never did get the hang of shooting a bipod, either, did much better w/coat, glove and sling.
Of course there is a lot more mirage at the longer ranges, so 200 yards may not be an issue w/your 32x. I did use the 20x for smallbore @ 100 without any problems w/mirage.
Its a good thing you have plenty of time to get on the range and sort out what works for you. 1.68" @ 200 yards is what, .84 MOA? As an old friend used to say, "They's sure a lot of air around that there target". Sounds like a lot of fun. Good luck and keep us posted.

Our own Egg Shoot is a lot of fun, 150 yards, 13 # and 16x max off shooting sticks not attached to the rifle. It's been won by 20P(a few times), 222 Rem, 223 Rem, and 22-250 that I've seen. One shoot it was so windy the winner said he was holding 4.5" off the egg to hit it,.my eggs survived intact.

No zeroing shots, pull it out of the case and shoot, just like hunting.

First relay 5 mi and five shots to break their egg, everyone that breaks their egg moves on with 3 shots in 3 min, break an egg and move on. Final round 1 shot in I think 30 seconds, break your egg and win or if there is a tie. Then it is alternate shots till the last man/woman standing. The last shoot off they needed a break to let barrels cool and get more ammo. It was a dandy to watch. A lot of eggs got vaporized. It is one of the highlights of the PM convention. First place in the past has been a custom AR by RPG..Your only allowed to win it once, then you move to a past winners match the following year and it is pretty much a bragging rights match. Hopefully we'll have a other, I've got a dandy coyote rifle I want to try out on eggs.

I've shot it with a 22-250 with a Balvar 8 on it, a 222 Rem with Vortex Viper 6.5-20 set at 15x and 6x45 with a Leupold 12x scope.

I was hoping someone would comment about the PM Egg Shoot…this is similar to what I am wanting to do. The target is a groundhog with scoring rings.

Beyond that, I don’t know any of the other rules or specifics.

Here is the next few months event list…couple other events I’d like to do as well.
it’d be nice if they had rules listed on their website for all the events, more people might be inclined to participate.
I think I’m going to be selling a few things and buying some new ones to compete in these events…the 17HMR one looks fun…I belong to 2 other clubs, but neither has the events this place does, and they are open to the public, don’t need a membership to participate.

That sounds like a lot of fun! Would love to have been able to make one, just couldn't make it happen.

I don't have much for pointers but all I can say is it's a lot of fun if you have accurate guns. I make all my stands out of rerod. I have a square frame I stick in the ground. Drill a small hole in golf balls, put a screw in them and hang them from the stand with string and shoot them at 200. Practice makes perfect.

A friends wife use to fill ping pong balls with water a glue them on a string. We hung them at 100yds and shot them with 22's and 17 HMR's. Lots of fun and challenging when the wind was blowing.

The sky is the limit, if you can use any cartridge besides a 6PPC.
How serious do you want to be?

Budget?
Does the rear bag you have, fit properly to all of your stocks?
If you are using a sporter forend of some kind, a forend 3" wide bag rider would help a lot.
I do not sell or have anything to do with these, but they are the best I have seen.
I like them enough to put their website on my price list, because a lot of people ask me about how to have more consistency off of their front rest and rear bag set-ups.
