A couple from the weekend

It was tough sledding this weekend, not sure if it's the warm weather or "experienced" coyotes, but they did not want to come in. Answer howls, yeah all night long, but come in, nope. Friday night I was solo, I had to make a move after locating 3, long story short 2 bugged out in different directions, but this one did wander toward me after blowing a bit on the trusty ol rabbid rabbit. I was afraid it had caught my trail walking in, so I took the Texas heart shot.

Saturday night, same place, I was partnered up and our plan was to stay stationary, howl every half hour or so, and just wait. It took 45 minutes for anything to answer, then they were everywhere but not visible. What was visible was this badger, I shot some footage with the Lumi H35 out of boredom. They are kind of interesting critters but this does get a bit long.

Finally, one wandered in from a long ways out, this one never answered any howls and we never played a sound after spotting it. It took forever and disappeared behind a couple knobs 150 yds out. We thought it was still close but couldn't see it for probably 15 minutes, until the deer in the background got up because she walked right through them. I wish I had all that footage because it was kind of cool to see. My buddy put it down at 112 yards I believe.

We hung out for quite a while after, eventually spotting 2 groups, 7 coyotes in all, that wandered across the pasture a half mile out, but would only answer howls, eventually I tried some whimpers, chirps, and a mild fight, but that just made them bug out. It was a cool night for all the stuff we saw but frustrating at the same time. I don't think this land has been called much this year, but I think the neighbor's gets pounded pretty hard.

Great hunt, fun to see the badger.
Thank you
What do you NOT like about it? If anything?
It weighs 3 pounds. It took a bit to get accustomed to the button layout on the ocular but that's old hat now. The rangefinder works fantastic at night, less so in the day, and particularly at 100 yards which I find a bit peculiar. I do think the rangefinder throws a pretty broad vertical laser but I feel it's been accurate. It's a hard thing to prove at night, but it does seem to be consistent with my buddy's scope of a different iray model. I've missed more shots than I like over 200 yards, but that's been my fault as the videos prove, with a couple exceptions that I can't explain.

I did shoot some prairie dogs out to 350 the other day and it seems like I have the ballistics dialed in pretty close. Also positive is how the rangefinder works, with easy transition from continuous to single mode. I was watching a review on an agm model where you had to go into the main menu to change that, which would not be great. Love the dual battery setup, it allows you to get everything out of the removable battery and not worry if you're in the middle of a stand. Love how the zoom works. The ocular zoom is a nice feature, though it wouldn't be a deal breaker without it.

I have been using the recoil activated recording, which is very sensitive. It started when I opened the battery door the other night. Not a big deal to delete videos you don't want though, and it's nice knowing if you don't have time to press record, which is kind of the more awkward button of the 3 on the ocular, that you still get the shot and 10 seconds before.

Maybe more info than you asked for, but I'm very happy with it so far. It wouldn't be my choice for a lightweight rig is the worst thing I can say about it. I bought it before shot show and all these 1280's came out, but I don't plan to upgrade any time soon. But maybe for 1500 more, I'd be tempted to go that way if I hadn't bought one yet. There's a lot of thermal hunters around here and the hunting is getting pretty dismal so I doubt I'll have many more kills until fall, but I'm going to figure out a practical way of practicing, whether that's in a p-dog town, which is tough in the summer because everything is hot, or maybe get one of those self sealing target balls and cool it down and shoot it around for awhile.

Thank you

Thanks for the report. I’m on the fence between the h50r and S60r.

Nice vids Russ. Excellent report on the scope for anyone interested in it, maybe you could paste it to the Optics forum.
Also, the Lumi seems to have a nice image also
