7PRC Nosler Ammo Issues

A few months back I bought some Nosler 7PRC ammo in 160 Accubonds to try out in a new build.

Fast forward a few months, I received the rifle and spent the last few nights shooting and getting it dialed in. Tried 180 ELDms, 160 LRX, and the 160 Accubonds. The Accubonds were the clear winner shooting close to .4 across 5 groups. I set my zero stop, and ordered 3 boxes from Midway.

Today I received them, completely different seating depth from what I had been testing all week. Literally a quarter inch difference. Has anyone else heard of this?

I have a call into Nosler but no response yet. I haven’t shot them, but I’m sure by the fact they are a quarter inch shorter, that will certainly affect things and possibly velocity.

Edit: I can’t get the picture to load. Will try again later.

Nosler is going to get back with me on Monday after he checks on it.

Would have to pull and weigh the suspect bullet. Bullet manufacturers often change or offer the same bullet with or without a cannelure. I have pulled factory rounds apart(not just Nosler) and the pulled bullets have very different measurements from boxed components that are labeled as same bullet. Changing the ogive location will change the coal.

Changing the ogive has very little to zero to do with factory ammo COAL because it's designed to run through a magazine and they go off what will fit and what's in the neck vs ogive jump.

I'd guess it's a much different weight as well as cannelure and ogive, hence a totally different bullet.

I measured the short rounds and the COAL is going from 3.01-3.09 so either right on the line of SAMMI or just below it.

That being said, I’m not enthusiastic about these new bullets jumping a quarter inch+

And while a few may be right on the line of SAMMI spec, factory ammo seating depth shouldn’t vary by .25”

You said you ordered three box's. Are all three box's of bullets the same length as the short bullet? Are all three box's marked 160 grain?
If the answer is yes. I'd pull a bullet and find out for sure what it really is. You can always re-seat it in the case. To me, and I'm no guru about anything, but when you enlarge the picture they don't even look like the same bullet. The shorter bullet looks more pointed to me and has a cannelure. Basically repeating what Kino has said.

Unfortunately I don’t have a good scale to weigh these on. I did pull a bullet…it seems close to the other but the shape of the bullet along with the cannalure just seem different.

All 3 of the new boxes are loaded short, I tried calling nosler again this afternoon but haven’t heard back.

Now I’m trying to decide if I should just move on to another bullet. But really want a bullet that can do both deer and Elk, the Accubond was setup great. Maybe time to get back into handloading…
