3D shoot

I got in another 3D archery shoot today 20 targets from 19 yards to 50 yard. Lots of hard core shooter, way out of my league but it is fun shooting at realistic targets at random ranges. Gets the juices pumping for hunting season.

I get my distances mixed up sometimes and missed two targets completely. It was a slow day today so I took my zero on the score card and re-shot them just for practice and made the shot oh well. The desert winds came up on the last target and my arrow did some wild gyrations and sale a foot over the target, looked like it had a mind of it's own again took a zero and shot a second arrow, perfect. I went back to the sight in bag and the errant arrow shot fine, another "oh well".

Now to get a dumb coyote within 45 yards

3 vanes and a fall away rest is good for an erratic arrow if you nock incorrectly. I went to 4 vanes to eliminate the possibility of a arrow nocking mistake.

I shot archery leagues and weekly 3D shoots for a lot of years. Lots of great memories with a lot of familiar friends and acquaintances. My oldest daughter was the top shooter in her division from the time she was in the pee wee division until she hung it up at about age 14 or so. You know… friends, boys etc were more important than hanging out with dad every Sunday! Lol. She always shot a division higher than she should have just to make it challenging and give the other kids a chance at a trophy. It was a rarity that when we would meet the regulars on the course that they didn’t ask “How’s Kelly shooting?”
To which I’d always reply “Great!… and I’m doing okay myself.” Lol.. nobody cared about my scores, but she had an amazing group of supporters.

I miss those days, but I’ll carry the memories with me forever.

Sorry Erich, didn’t mean to hijack your post. Glad you had a good shoot. 3D’s are great practice and there’s no better way to improve and work out the kinks in yourself and your equipment.

Our course is set up in mesquite dunes. Think a mogul ski course flattened out made of sand with mesquite growing out the top of the mounds. The mounds are 6-8 ft tall without the brush. The wind can get swirly in there. Great place to hunt coyotes as they can pop out from behind a mound or climb up on top to survey the situation. Rarely do I see where anyone pulled over to hunt them .

I love the flight of the arrow. Way back in the late 80's I was sponsored by a PSE Regional rep and on a shooting team of four representing the brand. We traveled all over southern Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Arkansaw shooting bowhunter class competitions. I had a blast with the boys shooting bows. College, career, and kids brought an end to all of that. Nowadays my son and I will shoot two or three 3D shoots per year just for fun. A local charity sponsors a great shoot along the banks of a lake and through the hills for about 3/4 mile. Walking this course in leaf change in October is a ton of fun. We have won some prizes and money, which we always donate back to the cause. A few years ago I won a big Rinehart target and started an auction on that thing right then and got the final bid up to $775! Guys were throwing cash at it knowing that money was going right back to the charity. Good times!

when i shot 3D archery my buddy and i used it for realistic hunting practice. i told them upfront i wasnt doing this for score and didnt want a score card as i was using a range finder and not really shooting from the stake.

some shoots said this was Okay...some others had problems with it. i figured as long as i paid and we werent competing who cared.

but...3D archery is a blast

3D shoots can be whatever you want them to be, to further your pursuits. (y) I've been shooting 3D since the late 70s and enjoyed them all. Nowadays, they seem to be a place where you pay to shoot their targets and your score is for you to do with as you please. There are a few competitive courses out there that either pay or award you with a trophy of some sort. :)

I shoot both compound and traditional bows, but enjoy my ILF recurves more than anything else. I may be traveling to ETAR Eastern Traditional Archery Rendezvous, in PA, this year. The IBO World Trads have caught my eye too. I've been to Berrien Springs, Michigan for the Compton Rendezvous and enjoyed it too. (y)
