375 H&H....light coyote rifle?

I have a friend that's moved here from Mississippi that has a couple of very nice LARGE bore rifles. The only 2 that he has to choose from for coyotes are a 375 H&H Mag. or a 416 Rigby. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

When he gets settled and can afford to, he's going to purchase a "normal" coyote caliber, like a .223, .22-250, etc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

He's a good shot with both and both are legal in Ohio. Which of these two calibers would you suggest he use for coyotes?

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

I would suggest the one that owns the most ammo for.
Because at the prices of those things you sure aren't
going to want to buy some just to shot at yotes.
Of course he could always trade one off for something
a little lighter.

OK, this seems ludicrous but I'll bite.

Go with the .375 it's a fairly flat shooting cartridge. If he cares about fur damage (ha ha) tell him to get a 270 grain solid load. That load will blitz right through a yote with minimal damage.

Since it is not expanding, it won't transfer much of its energy into tearing up the target. Oh, careful where you shoot a solid .375; when it passes through a coyote it's still got a LOT of energy left.

I would go with the 416 Rigby. The 375 H&H may be a little light for those big Ohio dogs. Maybe he can get away with that down in Mississippi but not up here in Yankee land....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would say the .375 just because it would have a little less recoil. It would suck to shoot one of those guns if you weren't holding it right. Seated shots with the gun on sticks will probably roll him over backwards, and if he had to take a shot off to the side and his shoulders were not squared...ouch! I know how much shooting a 3 1/2" 2 1/4oz turkey load sucks to shoot if you aren't holding the gun right.

Well initially I was laughing but then I recalled a few years ago, taking my Marlin 45-70 a few times and my 54 caliber muzzleloader a couple times and had a riot every time. Tell him to take which ever one he wants to shoot the worst and have some fun.

Nope, just teasin'. SteveF is right. The best rifle to kill a coyote with is the one you have in your hand. Of course, it's best if the rifle doesn't kill you in the process! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I have a model 700 bdl .375h&h that's magna-ported and it's actually quite pleasant to shoot, albeit noisy as hell. It doesn't hit me as hard as a 3 1/2 mag outta my beneli nova. Or even a 3inch mag for that matter.

Ha ha, good lord. I dont think either will do the job, does he have anything BIGGER!! I would take the one that shoots the best personally.

I have killed a number of coyotes with my 375 h&h, usually with 270 gr. Nosler Partitions for the reason stated above.

If your friend handloads and is strictly hunting coyotes, I would suggest the Speer 235 gr. bullets for the 375 Win. as they have a lighter jacket and he can get 2700 fps. or very close with them. In other words, have a blast! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yep, thats what I would shoot. Saves me the time skinning them, although I would have to pick the fur up in the next zipcode (or is the cob?).

Where I lived in ol Miss there wasnt anywhere that you could actually get enough range to shoot such rifle unless you were right on I-10. Crazy, them there's brown bear guns. I have shot a yote (or more) with my .264 win mag. Dropped him like a promqueen's roo's after the dance.

I think he should trade them both off for a barrett in .50BMG.

Another possibility is an AR with a surplus launcher. That also might be heavy enough.

Well you guys are just nuts!!!! I was a member of coyotegods but they ticked me off because they kept saying crap about this forum. I think this is a much better forum and they don't cuss you out here if they dissagree with the way you hunt. So since there so stuck on there ways I asked them if any of them ate the coyote meat, or was it ok to waste the meat. Just not the hide.
And on the bottom I put please don't cuss me out it's a lagit question. And I also named a few of the guys and said they acted like Hillary on that time of month. The way they cuss at everyone.
Hmmm I tried to log on the next day and I was banned. It's funny how they can dish it but not take it what a bunch of little babies.

So I think I will just stay on this site that has friendly people who answer your questions without calling you names. I am glad i found this site you have very good people here and the forum cares about it's members.
Well this is by far the best forum out there so I'm hooked!!!!! Amen.

I had the same experiences with the Coyote Gods' website and wouldn't [beeep] on their webpage, if I were getting paid to do so. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Those guys are very "holyer than thou" in thier beliefs on coyote hunting. I'll have nothing to do with them.

I agree, brother! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

As for the replies to this posting, thank you to all that have replied. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif I've loaned my .22-250 to the guy from Mississippi and he's going to wait, save the money and purchase a caliber that's more reasonable to hunt with for coyotes. He's a nice guy, but has always been on his own for hunting knowledge, rifle knowledge, etc.

It made me feel good to loan him my rifle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif His experiences have only been with .30 calibers and larger.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57
