It was -2 degrees today so I burned up some leave at work and went hunting. Been getting hosed anywhere close to roads so I packed into another deer hunting honey hole. Blanked on the first stand so I went into a badland canyon.
Played magpie distress for about 4 minutes and had a double show up at the top of a cliff. They were right at 363 yards and checked up so I took the shot. First shot was an impact and dumped the coyote off the cliff. His buddy went running and I got him stopped at 312 yards with some pup distress. Dumped him too. My tigger cam decided it was to cold to work anymore on that stand so it missed out on the rest of the day.
Went hiking and calling for a couple miles after that with no luck. I wasn't running into any fresh sign either. I eventually made it to a flat valley with a deep creek. Still not seeing sign I decided to give the creek a shot and set up right at the cutbank edge.
Played some distress and spotted a coyote a really long ways out. He disappeared after I cranked the volume up so I figured he was on his way. He closed distance fast but ended up almost at my downwind before I finally got eyes on him again. I got him to stop at 280 yards and dumped him. At that point, I played the pup again and spotted another coyote almost where this one just came from. So I was distracted and looking way down range when a flash caught my attention. I had a hard charging coyote almost directly in front of me. She say me at the same time and bolted. I flipped the pup distress on again and started howling at her. She finally stopped a little over 200 yards and I dumped her. Went back to looking for the other coyote down range and picked up another one coming from the other side of the creek. I got it stopped and squeezed the trigger off. Only problem was it started moving right when I was in my trigger squeeze and I missed. Somethings are just too good to be true. I thought these two were some of the prettiest coyotes I’ve shot in a while.
As I was loading them up, I spotted some deer sprinting away with two coyotes on their tails. I tried to go after them but could never locate them or the deer again.
As I was headed home I stopped at a spot I’ve always wanted to call. I had about a half mile walk into some foothills and got set up near two big ravines. Let out some lone howls and immediately had a coyote come out of a cut about 150 yards in front of me. He saw me as I was trying to swing over on him and bolted. I played some pup distress for a couple minutes and he popped out in a big ravine below me at approximately 300 yards. I barked at him and sent one into his lungs. In impact he was squirting so much blood I could see it in thick chunks flying in the air (sure wish my triggercam wasn’t frozen).
Pup distress was still playing and I heard some weird grunting behind me and directly down wind. I looked back and it was a hard charging coyote running towards my call. As I turned around he kept sprinting and went over the top of the hill. I jumped up and ran over the top after him and he popped up at the bottom of the hill, about 200 yards. I don’t know how but I barked him to a stop and dumped him. That whole stand was about 5 minutes and a rodeo. I decided to end on that high note and save the rest of the area for another day.
Ended the day with a total of 6 and all of them being doubles.
