Im looking for some recommendations for raccoon calling. i typically take my beretta a300 in 20ga and my 17hmr. but im looking to add a 22wmr to my arsenal.

I use a CZ-455 22 mag, Burris 4X 1.5-6x40ish for coyotes 40gr Win. Jacketed HP. Should work well on raccoons.

I would like to try raccoon hunting this year. I have a 17 hmr but also wanted a 22 wmr for this purpose and just for fun. I was looking at some bolt action rifles but ended up ordering a Tippmann Arms M4-22 Elite in 22 wmr…just looked neat. Hopefully, it will be in this week.

It’s fairly new but here is a review from 22Plinkster:

If you can find a CZ512 in 22mag, would be the way to go. Used one for the last 10 years for den calling. This year switched to the A17 WSM and haven't taken the 512 out.

If I were buying a new .22 Mag specifically for a calling rifle it would either be a CZ 512 semi-auto or a Winchester 9422M lever action. And hope that my new rifle shot the Winchester 40 gr. hollowpoint accurately.

Bergara BMR if you want accuracy along with an easy to swap trigger. They use Rem 700 triggers.

I should add that the 22LR BMR I just got has a very nice trigger right out of the box and doesn’t need a thing.

If you are just trying for a coon occasionally a bolt gun is fine. If you will call for numbers go semi/suppressed. Shooting 1" groups at 50 yards is plenty good, calling coon most shots under 100 foot and likely the raccoon could be moving, possibly running/climbing.

I'm not an AR gun guy but after watching the video I will say the Tippman is pretty neat. But its also gonna run you about $700-$800. If its in your budget and something you want then by all means buy one.

I have 2 at the moment…CZ 457 American & an Anschutz 1700…
I hate the barrel length on the CZ, it’s 25”…way too long in my opinion, but it shoots excellent.

The Anschutz is incredible, too nice to hunt with. I can’t bring myself to take it in the woods. It’s brand new and I was able to get a .2” group @50yds with it in some very heavy wind. It will tighten up even more once the barrel is broken in fully.

I’d like to get a 3rd one with a synthetic stock that I won’t feel bad about banging around. I had a Ruger American Predator, but hated it.

Otherwise for coons I use a CZ 527 .22 Hornet, I have that in a B&C stock.

Movement/sound is easy for raccoon to detect during the day, anything you can do to reduce movement (semi auto) and the noise of the firearm will help. You will likely be body shooting raccoon, some running in brush after climbing down from a tree or building. They will often be well above you looking down trying to locate the fighting or distressed raccoon.

I have some work to do.
Let us know what 22WMR you end up with

I would get a Savage or Marlin bolt action with a synthetic stock. In my opinion you don't want a nice, pretty wood stock to carry around in the woods to get all scratched up. Either of those would be plenty accurate enough to shoot a raccoon sticking his head out of a hole in a tree.
