17hmr vs 22wmr

I'm looking at getting one of these and running it suppressed. Will be used for mainly just shooting. Maybe some coyote work on bait piles, pigs in the head. Stuff like that.

I'm leaning toward the 17 bc I already have a 22mag, but it's not threaded.

Opinions?

I’ve got both. For coyotes I would stick with the 22 Mag. I would think the same for pigs but we don’t have them, and I have no experience with them. I hear they’re tough, but if you shoot em in the earhole they’re pushovers?

In my experience, the 17hmr gets the nod for accuracy. Think earhole! Lol… The 22mag gets the nod for driving a slug deeper or through a coyote with decent terminal performance with the right bullet. Neither are ideal in my opinion. Very limited times out with 17 after a couple lost animals. I think it’s right at 2 kills and 2 lost coyotes with the 17. The 22 mag has much better percentages over a much longer timeframe because that’s what I had to use at night for quite awhile before laws changed.

Crows seem to be an acceptable target for the 17. I don’t hunt crows much.

Well pretty much every one has said what I was gonna say. 22 mag all the way. I have both, and have shot coyotes with both. I’ve seen the .17 glance off bone then completely missing vitals. I will see if I can find the videos it was a while back. Went back to the 22 mag have never had any issues since.

It sounds like you're looking for some encouragement or a nudge pushing you in the direction of buying a 17 HMR. Since I'm a firm believer in helping my fellow man I will go on record as saying you absolutely need to get a 17 HMR because they are sooooooooooooo much better then a 22 mag. Now, do I really believe that, ehh who cares what any of us think but now you have a good excuse to go buy a new gun so when your wife, girlfriend, whoever, complains about you spending money you already have a built in excuse and can blame us. Besides, there's really only one way to find out which you like better and that is to have both. Shooting any and all rimfires suppressed is a whole lot of fun so you can never have to many of both.

Opinions are free and plentiful but if you've spent much time on these kinds of forums they can end up costing you a lot of money.

IMO, distance and shot placement using any rimfire on coyotes is vitally important to their success.

If you have an AR15, go to BCA and pick up a 17hmr and 22wmr upper.
You can usually get them for under 200 if your not in a hurry and are willing to play their game. Go to their web site, look at them often. Maybe even put them in your shopping cart. After a while they usually drop the price to just under 200.

The 22 mag thumps pretty hard, but as others mentioned, the HMR is more accurate (in my experience also). The 22 is pretty potent for its diminutive size. I have taken one coyote and one bobcat with a 22 mag, so my experience on predators with either is very limited as you can see. If I had to choose one of them for coyotes, it would definitely be the 22 mag. On another note, for crow and groundhog sniping my choice hands down would be the HMR. I have quite a bit of experience with that.
