1/16/25 Coyote Hunt

I got blanked on my first stand. Went to my second spot which was new to me after being asked to try and kill coyotes for a guy. I’ve hunted this section before, but on the south end. With a west wind I got set up facing south where I thought they would come from. After about 11-12 minutes into the stand I spotted one coming from the upwind side of the call.

Packed up and headed to another spot that I’d recently been asked to hunt. This spot is kinda unique for me because I usually set up in ag fields. This spot was kinda tight and I was concerned that a coyote might blow in and out of the spot before I could get a shot. Luckily this one came in nice and slow.

I hit him twice, last thing I wanted to do is go look for a coyote back in that thick stuff.

It seemed like it was a really good night to keep going, but I had to be up early to get the kids on the bus so I called it quits and headed home.

Congrats! Good shooting. What caliber are you shooting?
That's a 6arc. I'm shooting 65gr handloads at the moment. I think I'd like to try the 75s. The 65s are very accurate which I like, but I've had to put another bullet into almost every one I've killed this year. I don't like that.

Do you think that the 65s have a thicker jacket? Not expanding enough?

I have been very impressed with the 75's. It seems like I could shoot them in their pinky toe and they wouldn't go anywhere.

IDK exactly. All I can say is I didn't have this issue with the 6.5CM and 95gr bullets. I feel like I'm kinda drifting left when the shot breaks on my videos. It could just be poor shot placement on my end.

If you just want to try some, order you a box or two of the HSM or Duid Hill. If you like them, work up a similar load.

It's surprising you're having to use more than one. Are you seeing poor penetration or bullet splash?
I guess it's possible. I've never experienced bullet splash so this would be the first time dealing with it if that is in fact what's going on. I don't kill a ton of coyotes so my sample size is way smaller than a lot of you guys. This year for some reason, I'm getting a lot of chest shots and I'm seeing large entrance holes. I've kinda just been trying to be patient with it and not want to bail on the bullet yet thinking that I'm just not making great shots. The second coyote from 1/16 was pretty broadside. I didn't have a big entrance or exit hole on that one. I just put the second one in it when it was spinning cause I knew it was pretty thick back there and didn't want to have to look for it in the dark.

@wolverines I've never had it myself but I've seen other guys have it. Post number 10 on this thread shows some pictures.
