Osage Micro Howler

LONEHOWL

Custom Call Maker
Built a simple little howler for myself. Thompson style howler in Osage Orange and red material. Black micarta with some red and white spacers. O ring mouth piece. .014 reed on handmade tone board. Very small howler. I also punch a small hole toward bottom part of toneboard so you can cover it with bottom lip and get raspy barks with full air pressure but when you move your lip off of it it relieves pressure and gives smooth yips and howls. Anyways it’s something I came up with years ago and I’m used to it. All parts are made from scratch.

How easy is it for a novice to learn how to howl off something like that.
Not super hard if you’re a little determined. Personally I run a lighter .010 thick reed on mine most of the time because it’s easier to do subtle sounds on like puppy whines, raspy adult ki yis and higher pitched howls on. It’s not as loud but I like more control than volume. You can do the same on the thicker reed but it takes more practice and effort.
You also need at least one front tooth to run this type of toneboard to get it to do what you want. Pressure on the reed to sharpen tone and bend/warp it to get certain sounds is necessary. That sounds silly but it’s true. Also there’s a learning curve with the relief hole in toneboard. You can run the call by just running your front teeth down the reed with a bit of pressure and it will howl, but to get barks or rasp you’ll have to learn to block and unblock the hole with your bottom lip. It’s very simple and intuitive but takes practice.

These howlers are made to be a little higher pitched as well.
Sorry for the long winded answer lol.
