Peanut butter works well.
Funny story. Was trying to trap a possum that was playing hob with my avocados.
Caught quite a few then started having the bait stolen but trap not tripped. Tried slicking up the trigger, nothing. Figured it might be a baby possum or a rat, not heavy enough even for the hair trigger. Had a brainstorm and put a rat trap inside the larger trap w/peanut butter for bait. Peanut butter gone several times and neither trap tripped!!?? What the heck? After several futile attempts, I super glued an almond to the pan of the rat trap. Next morning I had a dead curve billed thrasher in the rat trap; whoda thunk it? I always set the trap in the evening because possums are pretty much nocturnal but apparently the thrasher was too.
