winchester 780 supreme powder has anyone tried this ?

I have not tried this powder but have wondered if it is not reintroduced H450. Looks about the same burn rate? I had always hated that Hodgdon stopped selling H450. Hodgdon had no powder in the 4831 category after that until the 780. Anyway good luck with it!

Hi,

I know this is a really old post but it didn't seem to get answered and I feel like I can give some educated input on the subject.

My hunting friend and I have planned a Colorado Elk hunt first rifle season for which we have our tags. His only Rifle is a Ruger 270 Winchester with a 22" barrel. He seemed interested in possibly using a Matrix bullet after reading article about it on another website and how well it worked for Elk. After he put me on to the article I bought some .277 Matrix bullets both the 165 gn VLD and the 150 gn bullet as I wasn't sure of the long and heavy 165 gn bullet would stabilize in the 270 Winchester but figured it would in my 270 shot mag.

However, after some testing I found I could stabilize it in the 270 Winchester Ruger rifle with it's 10 twist barrel.
After a lot of testing using at least 6 of the slower burning powders, (Winchester 780, IMR-4831, H-1000, Ramshot Magnum, RL-25, Magpro and a couple I've probably forgotten, Winchester 780 I felt was the most consistant. It was consistantly accurate and able to push that heavy bullet to over 2850 FPS. I never really expected to be able to push it that fast but it does and with consistant accuracy. Now, that is with using partial neck sized, once or more fired Norma cases trimmed to 2.530. A forster bump neck bushing die was used and GM215M primers. I gotta say though I was able to work nearly all the aforementioned powders up to 2800+ FPS.

Anyway, it is a very good powder for the 270, but I believe best suited to the heavier end of the 270 bullet range.
