This is, what I belive to be a javelina skeleton. If it is...Cant figure out what else it would be. It's huge more than 2 times the size of any I have ever seen. heres some pics I picked up the skeleton and its sitting in the backyard now so I can get pics with a ruler or somthing else if anyone wants.

at first my dad thought it might be a calf just by size but when I got up to it it's definitly not. its got canines and a bit of skin left on one side of its head.

well you got one dead one! I know there are hogs in AZ I can't remember the exact locations. granted very limited populations. Maybe a farmer dumped a dead one. Not sure how it happened, and it's a sow.
here is a hog head and a javelina head together. A really big boar and a 61 pound javelina sow skull. Hope this helps.

Definitly looks like a hog's skull. Doubt a rancher dumped it found it in a place that wouldnt be very easy to just dump somthing. Thanks for the help. Cool to know we've got some hogs out here.

actually it is most likely a feral/european cross. I have never seen a pure domestic hog with the extra tooth shown here.

Weston, we do have hogs. That is a hog not a Javelina! What a AWESOME find! I have never seen a hog, but they are out there. Might wanna go look for them where you found that as they are feral and can be killed anytime of the season with no bag limit!

Casey, I'll give you a call maybe this weekend (sunday) if your not busy we can go look for them. I'll go get another picture of the Tooth that guess is talking about to make it easier for people to see.

The AZG&F recently sent an employee (forgot his name) to our APC meeting last month and he gave a great seminar on Javalinas. In that seminar, I specifically asked about wild hogs in our state and their locations. he said they are only aware of 1 small heard located up NorthWest in our state. This heard started when a farming truck overturned scattering domestic hogs across the countryside.

Not to say he knows everything but that's just what he told us when I asked. I also asked about shooting one if we encounter one. He enthusiastically said to shoot every single last one we find.

That is not true. I know several people who have killed them from south of Tucson to north of Phoenix. I have also seen trail cameras from 6a or that area.

the tooth I'm speaking of is the tiny tooth on the bottom between the molars and the canine or tusk as we call them. The top tooth is what we call a wetter it's purpose is to sharpen the bottom tooth or tusk.
They claim that the tiny tooth is indication of a hybrid between a domestic/feral and a European {some times called russian}. I have no way of knowing if that is true but I can say that I can look at a hog and tell you if it has one before I even check, they have a different look to them.

The problem with the wildlife department speculating how many you have in the state is that they count the ones they see. By the time you see one you are infested! I saw the first hog here in 93. From 83 to 93 I spent 5-7 days a week in the field never saw one till 93, but they were here. I can remember my uncle killing one back in the 70's.

I just repeated what was told to me. I wish I had some of your information at that seminar and had the opportunity to ask him about it.

I also specifically asked him about Texas hogs being able to migrate to AZ since Texas appears to have such an abundance of them. They AZG&F guy told me it was virtually impossible for a few generations of hogs to make it here as the terrain is difficult to navigate.

Flyin, I am not going into the military per say, I am heading off to the Border Patrol academy.

Wrx, I was not picking you out, I was just stating that what you were told is NOT correct. Although I have never seen them I know they are out there in multiple places.

A buddy of mine has a buddy who goes out and glasses them at will! My buddy has missed twice!

Guys if your excided about it now, just wait, it want take very long and you will have more than you want!! A young Sow can get breed from 7 to 8 months old and 1 Sow can be responsible for 1,000 plus feral swine in a 5yr. period. Thats just 1 sow!!! I have them on my place and they distroy
so much farm/crop land each year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif Here in Texas and Oklahoma alone they probably cost farms millions if not billions of dollars every years in lost crops. If I was you I would take out as many as you can and don't stop because It is almost impossible to stay ahead of the breeding. They make you look at rabbit breeding as below average.haha /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
They are fun to hunt but at the same time a very serious problem. You can google wild hog problem or check out some very good info at texasboars site. They tell the history, the russian hog was brought over for hunter to trophy hunt and alot of info like that!! I've shot several 350 to 400lb. boars with 5" and 6 1/2" razor sharp tusk. I've been chased up trees, had to slide off a 15' bank down to a creek to get away from huge boar. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Good luck and shoot them all!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
